Greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture where they come from and how to reduce them

Manitoba growers are beginning to focus on how to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture.

Rising concentrations of greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere are a concern. Agriculture accounts for about one-tenth of Canada's 700,000 mega tonne total emissions. These emissions come in the form of carbon dioxide (from burning of fuels), methane (from cattle) and nitrous oxide (emitted from the soil under wet soil conditions).

So how can we reduce emissions from agriculture? We can do this by using techniques that are called "Best Management Practices (BMPs)"
